8 Fun Ideas To Get Your Kids To Eat Their Veggies
Having trouble getting your kids to eat their vegetables? I’m sure.
My daughter used to be great at trying and eating almost anything…and then she was 2 ½. Now it’s pretty much impossible to get him to eat anything but corn when it comes to vegetables. So I had to come up with fun and sometimes sneaky ways to sneak veggies in. Here are some of my favorites.
1) Make a big pot of vegetable soup, then add some fun noodle shapes. You can use alphabet noodles or look for some fun novelty shapes. You may be able to find some cartoon characters, sports toys and shapes, etc. I’ve even seen pumpkin shapes and Christmas trees. With any luck, your kids will be too busy writing words or identifying the shape to notice all the vegetables they’re eating in the soup.
2) If you can’t make them eat, make them drink. Pour some vegetable juice over ice and add a straw, cocktail umbrella or celery stick and watch them take. Your kids may not get as much fiber as eating all their vegetables, but getting them to drink their vegetables is better than not getting any vegetables into their system.
3) Have you tried offering them some raw veggies with some ranch dressing for dipping? Many children who don’t care much for cooked vegetables will eat them if they can soak them. Just grab a bag of carrots and cut up some red and yellow peppers and some cucumber. Place them on a plate with some ranch dressing or your favorite veggie dip on the side.
4) Take it even a step further and let them create works of art with their vegetables. Offer raw vegetables in different colors and shapes and encourage them to make a collage of vegetables on their plate. You can easily make a face by using cucumber slices for eyes, a baby carrot for the nose, and a red pepper slice for the mouth. You can use watercress or grated carrots or even some cheese as hair. Before you know it, you’ll find them showing off their “art supplies.”
5) To get them to eat more vegetables at dinner time, try a small salad bar. Put some lettuce, some sliced or diced tomato, cucumber slices, grated carrot, red and yellow pepper slices, small broccoli florets and anything else you can think of. You may also want to give them some options when it comes to salad dressing. Favorites in our house are Ranch, Italian, Catalina and French. To finish, put some croutons and grated cheese.
6) Get the kids together and make a cold veggie pizza. Start with a can of crescent rolls. Unroll the dough, but do not separate the triangular shapes. Instead, push the seams together and bake them on a baking sheet according to package directions. Allow the puff pastry to cool completely, then spread some cream cheese on it (we like a veggie or herb one) and top with some thinly sliced raw vegetables. Cut into squares and serve.
7) Make them participate in the kitchen especially when it comes to cooking. Ask them to wash the vegetables, if they are old enough let them cut vegetables (under your supervision of course), let them help you stir, or anything else you think is appropriate for the age You’ll be surprised how proud they will be of their finished product. Trust me, they will try almost anything if they can get it.
8) If all else fails, hide vegetables in other foods. My mother used to make us some special orange mashed potatoes. We thought it was very fancy, but all he did was cook some carrots with the potatoes and mash them right there. You can also cover the broccoli with tomato sauce or cheese. Think of a dish that your child really likes and add some vegetables to it.
