The Innovative Avant-Garde Short Story

Most of the writers follow the set conventions and writing style set by the previous writers, but some break such set conventions to bring change. The modern short story is sometimes called avant-garde, experimental, or unconventional fiction. In this article, you will learn about the “innovative” aspect of the story and its development.

Modern stories, unlike mainstream short fiction, do not rely on conventional characters, plots, conflicts, or other elements. They are relatively counter-stories that usually lack realism, a focused subject, and plot. Instead, such stories explore events through randomness, chaos, fragments, and arbitrariness. One of the main aspects of modern stories is that they are often unpredictable and that is why such stories produce effects of awe and wonder.

You might consider the modern short story an innovation in fiction. Since the 19th century, some writers have expanded the boundary line of the form. Gogol combined dream and reality in him The Overcoat (1842) which is a story about an unimportant clerk who dies of heartbreak after his new overcoat is stolen but later returns as a ghost to find justice. In other words, writers today have the freedom to experiment with form.

Franz Kafka’s stories beautifully combine the fantastic with the realistic. And as a result, the adjective “Kafkaesque” was coined to describe his stories. In the Penal Colony (1919) is one of the best of Kafka’s modern stories dealing with imprisonment and suffering. This type of fusion is often innovative in nature which succeeds in entertaining the readers.

Virginia Woolf used the omniscient point of view in Kew Gardens (1919). In this story, plants, insects, wind, noise, and light play an important role in humans.

After World War II, unconventional short fiction became more popular and common. American writer Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. to his Welcome to the Monkey House (1968) includes a range of stories that utilize the satirical genre of science fiction. Harrison Bergeron is such a story that begins with, “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal.”

Tommaso Landolfi, an Italian author, uses the biographical form in Gogol’s Wife (1954) for mocking men’s misuse of women. The dream story of French writer Anais Nin Ragtime (1944) is about Surrealism, which tries to represent the subconscious.

The more you read and study modern short stories, the more you will see how change has occurred over time.
